The ranch, located outside of Dubois, Wyoming, was once the original town of Dunoir, a tie hack village dating back to the 1920’s, where timber was once logged to make railroad ties. The ties were all cut by hand using a broad axe, leading to the term “tie hack.” A majority of the tie hacks were Scandinavian, from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The ties were floated down the Wind River to Riverton, Wyoming, and by the 1920’s, was the largest tie hack industry in the United States until the end of the era in 1946. Six of the original structures still remain.
Ike and Margaret Prine (see photos below) acquired the ranch from her father, Harry Bolle, who bought it in the 1940’s. Margaret’s father was said to have purchased the ranch in order to have a place to hang his moose head (his wife Mable, did not want that monstrosity in the house)! The infamous moose head still watches over activities in the “Moose” recreation cabin.
